Pushing Through… 

I’m pushing through a bit of Writer’s Block.

After a friend informed me they’ve been reading the site, I’ve been a little hesitant to add anything. The whole reason for this site was to remove myself from the “audience”, and just write.  I have a number of reviews in draft, either half done (like The Soska Sisters’ Rabid), fully done and hating it (like David Cronenberg’s Rabid) or just a frame up (like Sam Mendes’ 1917). The more I think about the audience liking anything I write, the more I freeze up. I know, it’s kind of backwards. Most people fear the idea of others not liking their work. I fear the acceptance of my work.

However, you can’t both isolate yourself and tell the world you have a site. It’s like saying “Hey, I have all this stuff I do…but please, don’t look at me while I do it.”

Everyone has a motivator. I usually tell myself, “No one cares, just get your thoughts down.” I also keep the below image as a motivator, which I found on Twitter. It’s not mine (obviously I don’t write for Vox), but it keeps me writing. When people come at you like this, it usually means that you’re either a threat, they never had the guts to try it themselves (because writing is hard), or it’s just jealousy.

Granted, yes, you really could be that bad, but if what you do makes you happy and doesn’t harm others or yourself, why diminish that?

Anyway, on the good side of things, I have the pressure of the Oscars looming. The Nominations are next Monday, from what I know. Deadlines are also good motivators. Since I’m usually at the movies every Thursday, I’ve been able to see most of the films that should earn nominations, and I promised to help out The Shattered Lens with their coverage. I am a little scared, admittedly. Awards related films are not easily dismissed, like most of the bad set of January movies. People will have their eyes on what’s being posted. Fear is a good thing, though. Every accomplishment I’ve ever had was done with a twinge of fear at the start.
