I first found out about Max Richter through my cousin, who is a big fan of HBO’s The Leftovers. After finding “November”, used in that show, I kept an eye out. He reminded me of Michael Brook, who was responsible for “Aquamarine” on the score to Michael Mann’s Heat and the score for The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
On the Nature of Daylight was used in both Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival. The song is used well in both films, but Arrival in particular is a great match. I love this piece. For every person I’ve lost, this was one of the songs that helped me through. I’ve cried to it, felt thankful to it, revisited memories and felt utter joy to be alive with it.
Perhaps having watched way too many movies growing up, many have said that Leonard’s unable to hold a conversation without directly relating any real life incident to a movie that matches it.
