One Mo’ Gin (by D’Angelo)

On this day, Thirty Years Ago, I met and made a great friend. Over the years, we’ve laughed and smiled, wept and sniffled, and grew in different directions. Some of those brought us closer and others gave us distance. Despite this, the friendship has always been fun. They’re a comfort zone. We keep in touch, and life’s kind of taken us in different directions.

When I first heard D’Angelo’s One Mo’ Gin, they were the first person to come to mind. Not all the of the lyrics fully sync – “I’m unhappy and miss the stuff we used to do.”, is partially correct. I’ve my own place, doing my own thing. Other lines hit home – “I know you gotta be getting back to your own thing / Baby, you got yours, I got mine” reminds me of La La Land. We have lives we’re living, and occasionally, we’ll pass each other in the hall, giving each other a quick nod and smile while on the way to what we’re doing. Still, I love the laughter when it happens.

Off the album Voodoo comes D’Angelo’s “One Mo’ Gin”, a lovely slow ballad of a song. It gets a little weird and jazzy at the very end, but I like to think it’s because the whole album is a blast, meant to be played from end to end.

Lyrics:

I know some things have changed since the last
I’ve seen you, some good, some for the bad, baby
All and all I can’t complain that’s what I’ve been through, baby
But seeing you reminds me of the precious times we’ve had

And I wondered all this time ’bout how you been
And I hoped by chance, I’d see you once again
I’d love to kiss your lips, baby, once again
I’d love to hold you tight, girl, one mo’ gin

I know you got someone and I got somebody too
But I’m unhappy and I miss the stuff we used to do
I miss your smile, your mouth, your laughter, baby
Never bumped into your kind before or after

And I wondered all this time ’bout how you been
And I hoped by chance I’d see you once again
I’d love to kiss your lips, baby, once again
I’d love to hold you tight, girl, one mo’ gin

I know you gotta be gettin’ back to your own thing
Baby, you got yours I got mine
I hope you know that you could call me, girl, if things change
If you want to we could catch up on some lost time

And I wondered all this time ’bout how you been
And I hoped by chance I’d see you once again
I’d love to kiss your lips, baby, once again
I’d love to hold you tight, girl, one mo’ gin
